My Houston townhouse bathroom renovation is complete!! I’m so exited to share my bathroom renovation after pictures. I’ve built myself a little tropical, colorful oasis full of light and so much more functional for Kyle and I. Every time I walk in, I get excited and surprised because I’ve been dreaming of this space for so long, I’m almost confused that it’s actually there now!
The Bathroom Renovation
My mid-2000s Houston townhouse was full of standard builder grade materials. The shower had floor to ceiling tile beige tile that matched the floor with a jets tub that we never used. The ultimate goal of the renovation was to upgrade the space with more modern (and colorful!) elements and make the space more function with added storage and a bigger shower.

The Bathroom Construction
After about 10 full days of work and 2 additional days to fix details, the Houston townhouse bathroom renovation is complete!! My contractor was Home Remedy Houston (who passed the test from my kitchen renovation) to do the demo and installation of the major fixtures in the bathroom. I also worked with Tre Designs on selecting final fixtures and getting into the details of designing the space.
The Shower
The shower is definitely the highlight of the space. When I removed the alcove jet tub, I was able to expand it another 18 inches, add in a bench and 2 niches for storing products. I also moved the shower head up about 12 inches so that Kyle at 6 feet could easily wash his hair without hunching. The frameless glass with the black matte fixtures is stunning! I’m so happy.
The Vanity
Upgrading the vanity is probably the most cost-efficient and impactful changes for a bathroom remodel in my opinion. I redid the counter and the sinks which was expensive. However, if I wanted to skip those changes, replacing the builder-grade glue on mirror with twin-framed mirrors and adding in gold vanity hardware makes such a difference and is such an easy DIY change.
The Linen Cabinet
Now that the tub is gone, I was excited to create a little alcove with extra linen storage. I got the dresser online and replaced the hardware to match the rest of the bathroom. (Seriously though, hardware upgrades = SO EASY). I’m still in the process of finding the right artwork to decorate the space. I’m thinking something fun and punchy in yellow or peach. My favorite addition is the antique pendant light. It’s from the 1920s and likely hung in a bank or department store. I bought it at August Antiques in the Heights, which has the most fun collection of antique lights to choose from.
Townhouse Renovation Lessons Learned
Here are some things that I learned from renovating my Houston townhouse kitchen and bathroom:
- Vet your contactors. I interviewed 6 people before selecting one for the work. From that process I was quickly able to see who communicated well and knew their stuff about renovations. I learned a lot from the interview process and combined all that knowledge into the final product. More about that process here.
- Buy all your fixtures ahead of time. My tile ended up being backordered and we had to rearrange work days to accommodate that. Super annoying because it extended the construction timeline and I had to pick tile up from 3 separate Home Depots around town. My mirrors were also backordered and I had to find a substitute pair last minute.
- Attention to detail with tile. I was so lucky to have worked with Tre Designs because they helped me think through how the tile should lay around the niches, the short wall and the exterior of the shower. The tile layers I had were talented, but they don’t necessarily think about symmetry and design when laying it. And Tre Designs advice made all the difference to make sure it was perfect.
- Advocate for fixes. Each day I would inspect the work and make lists of corrections that needed to be done (finishing painting, touch up grout, fix floorboards, redo caulking, etc.) and proactively communicated with the contractor to get those done. Again, super helpful having Tre Designs on speed dial when some tile was misaligned and I wanted to redo it, but wasn’t sure how.
